THE LOUISE AND GEORGE LYON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

RULES FOR APPLICATION

GENERAL:

A. The Scholarship is now administered by the Ocean Park Civic League (OPCL)
B. Representatives of the OPCL shall serve on the committee.
C. The purpose of the Scholarship Fund is to provide a grant of $1,000.00 for the period of one school year to a deserving student as determined by the OPCL.
D. The 2010 scholarship will be awarded to:
A student entering an institution of higher education within the state of Virginia.
or
A student enrolling in a Nursing Program in the state of Virginia which leads to a
Registered Nurse Degree .
E. Applications will be placed in all Virginia Beach High Schools, in the BEACON section of the Virginia Pilot and at www.opcl.org
F. In determining the annual recipient, primary consideration will be based on need for financial assistance and over all qualifications.
G. The league reserves the right to discontinue the Scholarship Fund at anytime.

PREREQUISITES:

A. Applicants must be senior year students in an accredited high school.
B. Applicants must have been a resident of Virginia Beach, Virginia for at least a year preceding the date of application.
C. Applicants must be a student in good standing and maintain a grade point average of at least 2.8.
D. Applicants must attend a college or nursing program in the state of Virginia.

APPLICATION:

A. Applicants for the scholarship must be submitted to the OPCL.
B. Applications must be submitted on the form provided by the OPCL, completed in full, signed by the student and the applicant’s parent or guardian.
C. The completed application should be mailed to:

RECIPIENT:

A. Recipient will be notified of selection at the school’s Senior Awards Assembly.
B. The recipient is required to advise the OPCL scholarship chairman of the name and the address of the institution to which the grant is to be sent.

The Lyons were lifelong members of the Ocean Park Civic League and dedicated a good portion of their free time to serving the community in which they lived. They were especially committed to supporting the Ocean Park Volunteer Rescue Squad which was the first, all voluntary rescue squad established in Virginia Beach and is still in operation today on Shore Drive. Please attach a short essay as to why you believe volunteerism is important and how you have made a positive contribution in your community through your volunteer efforts.

Submit three (3) letters of character reference, including at least one personal reference from an official at your school and two from persons other than relatives. Have all letters sent directly to the address below.
